Prof. Michael G. Kawooya

Professor Michael Grace Kawooya is a renowned Ugandan radiologist, educator, and researcher whose work has significantly advanced medical imaging and radiology training across Africa. Prof. Kawooya's academic journey began at Makerere University, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1983, followed by a Master of Medicine in Radiology in 1988. He further specialized with a radiology fellowship at the University of Tübingen in Germany (1989–1991) and an ultrasound fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in the USA in 2001.

Leadership and Institutional Development

As the Director of the Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (ECUREI), Prof. Kawooya has been instrumental in establishing the institute as a premier center for ultrasound and medical imaging training in Sub-Saharan Africa. Under his leadership, ECUREI has expanded its academic programs and gained recognition as a World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) Centre of Excellence. ​

In addition to his role at ECUREI, Prof. Kawooya serves as the Vice Chancellor of Ernest Cook University, overseeing the institution’s strategic direction and academic excellence.

Research and Publications

Prof. Kawooya’s research primarily focuses on ultrasound and diagnostic imaging. He has authored over 55 peer-reviewed articles and contributed chapters to books on topics such as imaging of tropical diseases. His work has been pivotal in enhancing the understanding and application of medical imaging in resource-limited settings.

Professional Affiliations and Honors

Prof. Kawooya has held several key positions in professional societies, including:

  • Secretary General of the African Society of Radiology (2008–2017)

  • Founding Member and Past President of the Uganda Society for the Advancement of Radiology and Imaging (USOFARI)

  • Vice President of the Mediterranean and African Society for Ultrasound (2002–2008)

His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, such as:

  • Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (2015)

  • Honorary Membership of the European Society of Radiology (2019)

Prof. Michael Grace Kawooya’s dedication to medical education and radiology has left an indelible mark on healthcare in Uganda and beyond, fostering the growth of diagnostic imaging services and training across the continent.
