Eng. Proscovia Margaret Njuki

Eng. Proscovia Margaret Njuki is a pioneering Ugandan electrical engineer and seasoned civil servant, celebrated for her trailblazing contributions to engineering and public service. In 1974, Eng. Njuki graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, becoming the first female Ugandan—and likely the first woman in East Africa to earn an engineering degree.

Professional Career

  • Uganda Television (UTV): Eng. Njuki commenced her career at UTV, where she advanced from a telecommunications engineer to Head of Engineering Services, and eventually to Commissioner. ​

  • Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL): She joined UEGCL’s board in 2013 and was appointed Chairperson in November 2016, officially assuming the role in February 2017. Under her leadership, UEGCL has overseen significant developments in Uganda’s energy sector.

  • Board Memberships: Eng. Njuki serves on the boards of Multi-Konsults Ltd, Mildmay Uganda, and Greenhill Academy Ltd.

Professional Affiliations and Advocacy

  • Engineers Registration Board (ERB): In 1989, she became the first female engineer registered by the ERB.

  • Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE): Eng. Njuki is a longstanding member and served on its executive council from 1990 to 1993.

  • Association of Women Engineers, Technicians and Scientists in Uganda: She is a founding member of this organization, established in 1989, which promotes the participation of women in STEM fields.

Academic Governance

Eng. Njuki is a member of the University Council at Ernest Cook University (ECU), contributing to the institution’s strategic direction and governance.

Personal Life

She is married to Samwiri H.K. Njuki, and together they have three children.
