Prime Minister Nabbanja Commends Ernest Cook University for Advancing Research, Innovation and Healthcare Training Bulenga, Uganda | May 29, 2026

Ernest Cook University (ECU) has received national recognition for its contribution to higher education, healthcare training, research, and innovation, following commendation from the Prime Minister of Uganda, the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, during the University’s 10th Graduation Ceremony.

The ceremony, held at the University’s Bulenga-Kikaaya Campus, celebrated the achievements of more than 400 graduates and highlighted ECU’s growing role in developing skilled professionals who are driving Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

Recognition for Excellence in Education and Innovation

In a message delivered on her behalf by the State Minister for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, Hon. Kabuye Kyofatogabye, the Prime Minister praised Ernest Cook University for its significant investment in higher education and its commitment to producing professionals in critical healthcare disciplines.

She particularly applauded the University’s efforts in:

  • Research and innovation
  • Medical technology advancement
  • Community outreach initiatives
  • Cancer screening programs
  • Healthcare education and awareness

“This is the kind of practical education that our country needs,” the Prime Minister noted, emphasizing the importance of institutions that combine academic excellence with community impact.

Celebrating the 10th Graduation Ceremony

The University’s 10th Graduation Ceremony was held under the theme:

“Nurturing Innovation for Socio-Economic Transformation”

The event brought together distinguished guests, academic leaders, government officials, staff, students, alumni, and families to celebrate another milestone in ECU’s journey of academic excellence.

Graduates received qualifications in a range of disciplines including:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Diagnostic Ultrasound
  • Early Childhood Development
  • Medical Radiology
  • Health-related postgraduate programs, including Radiology

These graduates join a growing network of ECU alumni who are making meaningful contributions across Uganda and internationally.

Empowering Graduates to Transform Communities

The Prime Minister encouraged graduates to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies to address challenges within their communities.

She emphasized that innovation, discipline, and hard work remain essential ingredients for national development and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to supporting science, technology, industrialization, and the digital economy.

Her message challenged graduates to become active participants in Uganda’s transformation into a modern and prosperous nation.

Strengthening Healthcare Education and Research

Speaking at the ceremony, ECU leadership highlighted several strategic developments aimed at strengthening healthcare education and research.

University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Grace Kawooya, revealed that the University has completed the structural phase of its eight-level Teaching Hospital at the Mengo Campus. Once operational, the facility is expected to enhance:

  • Advanced diagnostic services
  • Clinical training opportunities
  • Medical research
  • Patient-centered healthcare delivery

The Vice Chancellor also announced that the University’s research laboratory has been established and will soon be officially launched, further strengthening ECU’s commitment to innovation and evidence-based healthcare.

A Legacy of Producing Global Health Professionals

ECU continues to build a reputation as one of Africa’s leading institutions in medical imaging and radiography education.

According to University leadership, ECU graduates are excelling in various professional fields including:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Diagnostic Ultrasound
  • Physiotherapy
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Nutrition
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Health Administration and Management

Many alumni have gone on to work in international healthcare systems, including the United Kingdom, where several hold leadership positions in hospitals and healthcare institutions.

A Call for Continued Support for Higher Education

University Chancellor, Prof. George B. Kirya, expressed gratitude to the Government of Uganda for creating an enabling environment that has allowed private universities to flourish.

He also called for continued support for higher education, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, research funding, and innovation in accelerating national development.

Addressing the graduates, the Chancellor encouraged them to embrace lifelong learning, ethical leadership, and service to society while maintaining a global outlook.

“Be innovators and change-makers, which our country, Uganda, and the world at large so desperately need.”
